Game Collection Part 3: Nintendo

Last part of my game collection. They don’t call Nintendo the Big N for nothing.

Part 1: Sega and Microsoft
Part 2: Sony and PC
Part 3: Nintendo

As usual, I’ll be providing my own little commentary on each console as I go.

Nintendo Entertainment System

Likely the very first console I ever played, but not the first that I owned. When I finally got one, I had replaced the internal contacts so the games would boot up good as new, but then the system died on me. sigh

Nintendo 64

The N64, along with a tiny 12 inch tv and Mario Kart 64 were presents when I completed elementary school. This might’ve been considered Nintendo’s fumble, but I still think its a better system than the original Playstation.

  • THe Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Pokemon Gold Version
  • Pokemon Trading Card Game
  • Turok 2: Seeds of Evil

Nintendo Game Boy Advance

The good ol’ GBA. I owned both the original system, in clear blue that I got shortly after launch, and the black GBA SP. I really loved this system and the few times it could connect with the Gamecube were generally for the better. I hope Nintendo begins to explore more DS/Wii connectivity. It could be awesome.

  • Advance Wars
  • Bionicle: The Game
  • Castlevania
  • Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
  • Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance
  • Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
  • Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3

Nintendo Game Cube

A case could easily be made for the Game Cube being my favorite console. Could be true. I love the Cube. It may have lost the last generation, but I don’t think there was any shortage of awesome games for it. There was more than enough to keep a GameCube-only household happy for an entire generation if you were willing to look.

Nintendo DS

I know I didn’t get this at launch, but I got it soon afterwards. I’m still using the old DS. I was planning to upgrade to a black DS Lite before the Wii came out and we still though Nintendo would release it in black and white. When that happened, I started considering getting a white DS Lite, and I’m sure I will eventually, but for now my DS Phat still has more than enough life to earn space in my pocket.

Nintendo Wii

I camped out in front of a Toys R Us on a cold night next to a freeway to reserve this thing…and I think it was worth it. The dominant force in this generation, the Wii has become the home of shovelware, which I take as something of a good thing. The PS2 was the home of shovelware last genearation, although most hardcore gamers will conveniently forget that fact. The PS2 got over 12,000 games last generation. How many of those can you name? How many of those were decent? How many of those were awsome? I think the Wii is in much the same situation, although detractors continue to overblow the problem of shovelware as if it wasn’t there in any prior generation.

When lightning strikes on the Wii, it usually strikes hard. Granted, not all the great games make use of the motion controls, but then again, not all the great DS games make use of the touch screen. But hell, I know that when I play RE5 on the 360, I WILL be missing the Wii controls. Like it or not, the Wii is no gimmick, it is here to stay.

Nintendo Virtual Console

For a long time, the Virtual Console has us questioning its right to exist, but then it gives us something awsome and we beg it for more. The fact that it has consoles that didn’t break into the mainstream like the Neo Geo and the TurboGrafx as well as titles that haven’t been released in the US makes the potential for the Virtual Console blindingly awsome. Now if only they wouldn’t spend so much time on filler and give us the greats. I’ve been waiting on Rondo of Blood and Castlevania: Bloodlines since day one. Of course, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and I’d be surprised if any VC release doesn’t have at least one fan loyal enough to buy it.

Nintendo WiiWare

Of the current gen consoles’ downloadable game library, Nintendo’s WiiWare holds the most appeal for me. XBLA has Prince of Persia Classic and Penny Arcade that interest me. PSN has nothing. But the upcoming WiiWare games look great. Strong Bad, Animales de la Muerte, Eternity’s Child, and Shantae are just some of the games that are interesting me at the moment. Unfortunately, my Wii is feeling the strain in storage space which has prevented me from buying any more WiiWare games at the moment. Hopefully Nintendo announces as Wii hard drive at E3 or a firmware update that lets the Wii read from the SD card.

BONUS: Turbografx CD

This probably could’ve fit elsewhere but if it did, I forgot, so its going here. I’ve never owned one of these before, I only have this one game.

  •  Castlevania Dracula X – Rondo of Blood (JPN)

And there you have it. The third and final entry. Took a while and I think I may now have carpal tunnel syndrome, but its done.

Once again, LE Review suggestions can go in the comments. The next LE REview will be up on Friday along with a blog post covering Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes.
